Beautiful antique black Vauxhall glass French jet butterfly brooch from the Victorian era, with beautiful hexagonal and navette/marquise cut faceted glass stones. Victorian French jet jewellery was inspired by pieces of mourning jewellery, which was made popular during this period as it was Queen Victoria's only jewellery following the death of her beloved husband.
The Victorians were also huge fans of natural world themes being brought in to jewellery and home decor. Insect jewellery was incredibly popular. I love this article about the reasons for this and some of the history: https://brucewilsonauthor.medium.com/the-strange-fad-for-victorian-insect-jewelry-6b7b525068ec
The brooch has a length of about 3 inches and a width of about 2 inches and fastens with an older style Victorian hook clasp and pin.
It is in good vintage condition, especially considering its age. I can't see any chips or losses to the glass pieces. The wiring has gained a few tiny kinks and bends over the last century and a bit!
